Star power on the cricket field

It was a star-studded weekend in Hyderabad. The Kalyan Jewellers CCL (Celebrity Cricket League), powered by Parle 20:20, saw a stadium packed with celebrities — some on the field, some cheering, and their fans.

Day 1: Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium
This season's debutants, the Bhojpuri Dabanggs are already a star team. Having beaten the defending champions, Chennai Rhinos in their first match, they were in high spirits as they took on the Kerala Strikers on Saturday. Having won the toss but choosing to field first perhaps went against Mohanlal led Kerala Strikers, for the rain gods had a different plan. Concluding their innings with a remarkable 167/5, the Dabanggs didn't really have anything to lose, and getting a wicket in the very first over (Nivin Pauly), the Dabanggs stayed true to their name. A sudden downpour in the 10th over, when Kerala Strikers' scoreboard read 75, disrupted the match. After about 45 minutes, the Dabanggs were declared the winners of the match, following the Duckworth/Lewis method (when play was halted, Kerala Strikers needed to have scored 87 runs to win).

The second match, which was delayed because of the rains, saw Sudeep's Karnataka Bulldozers take on Chennai Rhinos. Chennai won the toss and decided to field. But the rain once again played spoilsport. With one wicket down and the scoreboard reading 43, the match had to be stopped. The result — one point each to both the teams.

Day 2: Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium
Riteish Deshmukh has his own team this time around — Veer Marathi. His gain seems to be a loss for Sohail Khan's Mumbai Heroes at least in having the most energetic cheerleader in the team. Kudos to Genelia D'Souza for high energy throughout the match against the Bengal Tigers. She cheered loud, jumped with the team's flag at every run and ball!

Batting first, opening batsmen Riteish and Mahesh Manjrekar made 21 and 23 runs each. Soon enough, it was S Mooley whose batting did all the talking. With 70 runs off 40 balls, Mooley was instrumental in getting the team's total score to 172, and was declared Man of the Match. Though Bengal's Sandy managed to score 46, the team was no match for the Marathis. With six wickets down at the close of the innings, the Bengal Tigers could only score 140. As Riteish was called by Charu Sharma at the presentation, he took the opportunity to thank Genelia for being such a great cheerleader.

The second match was the clash of the titans - Telugu Warriors vs the Mumbai Heroes. With news that Salman Khan will be here to cheer his brother's team, the stadium was packed to the gallery. Ram Charan, making his debut in this season, was the star attraction, apart from Venkatesh. Ram, however, did not bat nor bowl; he only fielded, but getting to watch him live was enough for his crazy fans. Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Mumbai Heroes went on to score 134 (all out). Telugu Warriors, on the other hand, lost only three wickets with the scoreboard reading 136, at 17.5 overs. With two overs to spare, Telugu Warriors won the match by 7 wickets, and Adarsh, who scored 58 runs (off 36 balls) and also took a wicket was declared the Man of the Match.
