Markandey Katju appeals to Maharashtra Governor to pardon Sanjay Dutt

Retired Chief Justice of the Press Council of India- Markandey Katju appealed to Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan to pardon Sanjay Dutt who was convicted by Supreme Court and sentenced to 5 years in jail couple of days ago for possession of illegal arms in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

The appeal has also garnered support from several ministers of UPA Govt. who feel that if the actor approaches the Governor with a plea, he can be pardoned on humanitarian grounds. The Governor does have the power to pardon and use his discretion in such a situation.

However IB Minister Manish Tewari decided to play it safe and said that the authorities will take cognizance of the matter at an appropriate level.
