Diwali 2012 Special: Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit as entrepreneurs!

On the occasion of Diwali's Padwa day, we take a look at some of B-town's enterprising stars who have done good business over the last couple of years

Bollywood stars are no longer limiting themselves to launching their production house or studio and acting in their own movies. They are being aggressive and innovative investors and marketers and surprising everyone with their business acumen. So while Aamir Khan ventured into television production and slotted his show Satyamev Jayate at the long-forgotten time of Sunday 11am, Anil Kapoor decided to bring home the 24 series – in whose international version he acted - in a completely Indian version. While Salman Khan invested in a travel website, Shahrukh Khan thought a stake in KidZania would be a good idea.

And the girls are not far behind. Madhuri Dixit-Nene launched a production house and also bagged plum endorsement, acting and TV hosting. And Karisma Kapoor bought a share in baby products website. Lara Dutta turned producer, but is now also coolly selling sarees. Hunk John Abraham sold the idea of sperm donation successfully through his first production, Vicky Donor. Click below to know who else makes it to our list of stars who began new initiatives in the recent past – and made a crackling impact, Diwali style!

  • bMadhuri Dixit-Nene:/b brbr This elegant and beautiful actor-dancer has surprised everyone with her industriousness and ambition. Not only did she convince her hotshot UCLA-educated doctor husband to return to home turf, but also went on an endorsement- and movie-signing spree within a year of her return to her roots. Add to that, hosting a dance show on TV again, and becoming brand ambassador of a food channel. But of course, it was all well planned. So what followed was not too much of a shock for the trade – Madhuri bought a couple of houses and opened a movie production house. Bravo, lady!

  • bAamir Khan:/b brbr The actor-director had already proven himself as a maverick producer with iLagaan/i, iRang De Basanti/i, iTaare Zameen Par/i, iJaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na/i, iPeepli:Live/i, iDhobi Ghat/i and iDelhi Belly/i. He took it a step ahead by producing the TV phenomenon, iSatyamev Jayate/i that went on to become an iconic chat show that created a minor social revolution in India and made sure Aamir was splashed on the cover of iTIME Magazine/i's international version (not Asian). Kudos is all we can say. And now, the actor is ready with his next production, the suspense drama iTalaash/i that releases on November 30, 2012. He is also producing and starring in the Rajkumar Hirani-directed iPeekay/i.

  • bSalman Khan:/bbrbr His family members might have produced films before, including Arbaaz Khan's iDabangg/i, but Salman got enterprising by investing in iYatra.com/i – a travel website he endorses. The group that owns iYatra/i – Network18 – already had a happy relationship with Salman thanks to his brand ambassadorship of Viacom18's HISTORY channel and also as host of iBigg Boss/i on Colors. Salman just had to take this smooth business relationship to the next level, so much so that he never went back to hosting his successful show i10 Ka Dum/i that launched him on TV, for rival channel Sony. Salman also launched the clothing line of his Being Human Foundation and got endorsements such as BlackBerry PlayBook and Thums Up (for the second time).

  • bShahrukh Khan:/b brbr The actor already has a successful production house called Red Chillies Entertainment which not only makes movies, but also line-produces them. It also has a TV division, Red Chillies Idiot Box that produced, among other things, a chat show featuring Lady Gaga. SRK's company also takes interest in special effects through Red Chillies VFX that painstakingly created the high-tech fireworks of iRA.One/i in-house. The actor also owns the Kolkata Knight Riders team in the Indian Premier League cricket series. And being one of the top brand ambassadors in India, SRK recently acquired a 26 percent stake in KidZania family edutainment centre recently – a brand that he will, of course, endorse.

  • bAnil Kapoor:/b brbr The actor who gave a stellar performance as the host of iKaun Banega Crorepati/i in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning film iSlumdog Millionaire/i appeared in the hit US TV series i24/i soon after – as the leader of an Arabic nation. He then had a minuscule role in iMission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol/i. What next? Not wanting to hit a dead end, Kapoor decided to adapt i24/i to Indian sensibilities, taking a chance to produce the show in Hindi, with him reprising Kiefer Sutherland's role as the hero. Buzz is that Anil has already set up a studio in Mumbai for the shoot. Good going!

  • bAkshay Kumar:/b brbr He already owns Hari Om Productions, but the actor launched another company in partnership with Ashvini Yardi, former programming head of Colors. Called Grazing Goat Pictures, the new outfit released its first film iOMG! Oh My God/i a month ago that was well-received by audiences.

  • bLara Dutta:/b brbr The new yummy mummy recently launched a range of sarees into the Indian market. But before that, she produced an almost-indie film, iChallo Dilli/i. Some extra earnings for the new baby in her life, daughter Saira, would do no harm, wethinks! And even when hubby Mahesh Bhupathi is a tennis icon, we like the self-reliance, woman!

  • bJohn Abraham:/b brbr The handsome MBA hunk turned film producer this year – he was already a producer of ads – and made a smashing debut with iVicky Donor/i. The film with its unique storyline was so well received that even Hollywood took notice and thought of remaking it. Abraham will be producing many more films in the coming years. Well done!

  • bPreity Zinta:/b brbr B-town's bubbly babe already tested her business acumen as an IPL cricket team owner. She now has produced a movie, iIshkq in Paris/i, that will be her comeback vehicle.

  • bDino Morea:/b brbr The model-turned-actor co-produced saucy iJism 2/i starring pornstar Sunny Leone.

  • bKarisma Kapoor:/b brbr Another yum mum of B-town who made a comeback with the film iDangerous Ishhq/i, invested in a business last year that seemed closest to her heart – a baby products website! With two lovely kids, that's what we would expect of her. :-)

  • bArjun Rampal:/b brbr The model-turned-actor-turned-producer opened a nightclub-lounge in his hometown Delhi – Lap – to coincide with the first Indian Grand Prix held in 2011. Lap will come to Mumbai soon, we hear.

  • bDia Mirza Zayed Khan:/b brbr The good-looking but not-so-successful Bollywood actors Dia Mirza and Zayed Khan launched a production house in early 2011. However, their maiden film, iLove Breakups Zindagi/i, didn't exactly make it to people's hearts or to the BO hits list. Let's see what they have to offer next. Maybe this Diwali will bring them the luck they so want and perhaps deserve!

  • bRiteish Deshmukh:/b brbr Not many know that the just-married actor is also an architect and owns a design firm. But Riteish is also a sport freak and bought a Celebrity Cricket League team recently called Veer Marathas.

  • bPrakash Jha:/b brbr The ace director who also tried his hand at politics owns a mall in Patna, the capital of his home state Bihar.

  • bResul Pookutty:/b brbr The Oscar Award-winning sound designer of iSlumdog Millionaire/i co-produced an indie called iI.D./i, which was showcased at the 14th Mumbai Film Festival.
