DIWALI SPECIAL FEATURE: Heroine, Aiyyaa, Joker – Damp squibs of the year

Though 2012 has been a good year for Hindi cinema, there have been some colossal disasters that embarrassed the makers and the actors involved

There is a lot of money riding on Bollywood films, and many households dependent on box office collections. Making a film is one of the biggest gambles ever, and crores of rupees and humongous egos are at stake. The year is yet to end, but there have already been more films than we can count that were rejected outright by audiences. Here are some such projects that were damp squibs….

  • bPlayers/bAbbas-Mustan's crime thriller was one of the most awaited films of the year. It had an ensemble cast comprising Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bipasha Basu. iPlayers/i was promoted well, but this time the director duo went overboard with the twists. It didn't help that the star cast was all non-actors. An official adaptation of iThe Italian Job/i, this was one of the biggest duds to hit the marquee this year.

  • bEkk Deewana Tha/bDirector Gautham Vasudev Menon tried to make a comeback to Bollywood with this Prateik-Amy Jackson starrer. iEkk Deewana Tha/i was an adaptation of Menon's Tamil superhit film iVinnaithaandi Varuvaaya/i and a lot seems to have been lost in translation. AR Rahman's music didn't work well either. A wooden Prateik couldn't do much to save the fate of this Valentine's Day release.

  • bTezz/bThis Ajay Devgn-Anil Kapoor-Kangna Ranaut starrer was director Priyadarshan's big budget yet shoddy version of Neeraj Pandey's iA Wednesday/i. It was full of loopholes, had bad acting and a silly story. This film also had Zayed Khan playing a leading man. What surprised us was that actors like Ajay, Anil and Boman Irani agreed to do the film.

  • bDangerous Ishhq/bSince it was Karisma Kapoor's comeback film, there was a lot of pre-release buzz about this Vikram Bhatt spook fest. Many of Karisma's fans were wondering why she had to do a Bhatt project when she could have done a bigger and better comeback film. Destiny had other plans, and this 3D dud sank without a trace.

  • bJoker/bShirish Kunder's ambitious venture is perhaps one of the rare Bollywood films that was deserted by its leading man. A few days before the release of iJoker/i, Akshay Kumar disowned this supposedly madcap caper that involved aliens aka Rakesh Roshan's iKoi Mil Gaya/i. The failure of this initially 3D-later converted to 2D cost Kunder the Salman Khan film, iKick/i. The quirky director ended up as the butt of many jokes and made us all giggle.

  • bAgent Vinod/bPeddled as Bollywood's take on James Bond, this Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer was a letdown. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, iAgent Vinod/i was spread all over the place with far too many characters to keep tabs on. The convenient filmi climax did not help.

  • bAiyyaa/bRani Mukerji went white in the face telling everybody that iAiyyaa/i wasn't her comeback film. Director Sachin Kundalkar stretched his short film iGandha/i and created a gaudy and an over the top film that ended up irritating the audience rather than entertaining them. No doubt Rani went out of her comfort zone and shed her inhibitions for this role, but she also made us uncomfortable watching iAiyyaa/i. South star Prithviraj might be regretting making his Bollywood debut with this disaster.

  • bHeroine/bMadhur Bhandarkar's 'slice of life' take on Bollywood made audiences cringe. Not only did the director employ every cliché in the book, he also painted the film industry in its ugliest colours. Kareena Kapoor was in her element in iHeroine/i, but could not save the film. Even her iHalkat jawaani/i item number was in vain. It is rumoured that Kareena did this film to bag her first National Award, but it does not seem likely to happen.

  • bTeri Meri Kahaani/bThe idea of two lovers meeting in three lifetimes sounds interesting, but director Kunal Kohli's epic romance wasn't. iTeri Meri Kahaani/i was one of those films where the actors seemed to have worked hard, but were let down by lazy writing. The over-hyped Shahid Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer was dull and over-long. The forced song and dance made it even worse.

  • bBhoot Returns/bThis spook fest is an addition to the long list of director Ramgopal Varma's duds. This sequel to the highly appreciated iBhoot/i was Manisha Koirala's comeback to Bollywood. She shared screen space with JD Chakravarty and baby Alayna Sharma. But the fine actress was wasted in a film that fell flat with the audience.

  • bJodi Breakers/bAfter the disastrous iPlayers/i, Bipasha Basu was hoping to undo the damage with Ashwini Chaudhary's rom-com. R Madhavan, whose previous film iTanu Weds Manu/i was a hit, couldn't save this one. One thing that went against iJodi Breakers/i was its budget - it was shot at exotic locations all over the world and cost far more than it earned. The non-inspiring music served by Salim-Suleiman did not help.

  • bLondon Paris New York/bDirector Anu Menon made her Bollywood debut with this Ali Zafar-Aditi Rao Hyderi rom-com. iLondon Paris New York/i wasn't a particularly bad film, but it suffered when it was released on the same day as Tigmanshu Dhulia's iPaan Singh Tomar/i, which was lauded by almost everyone who watched it.
